A thief was shot dead in an alley while at the same time a woman who turns out to be an assistant Senator Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) died due to fall and get run trains. Two seemingly unrelated events it turned out to have a strong connection in the eyes of a journalist named Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe).
Cal initially was the campaign manager of Senator Stephen but instead ended up as a journalist. With the help of Della Frye (Rachel McAdams) is ambitious, Cal and then start collecting the facts as if it was related to two tragic death. Cal suspected there was a conspiracy behind the two deaths that seemed related to this.
Slowly but surely, Cal and Della started to able to gather facts and begin to look a picture of the scenario behind this conspiracy. The closer Cal in truth, the more hesitant Cal to continue. He knew what he said could shake the pillars of the state leadership and not impossible soul will be threatened if he continued the investigation.
