No one thinks that Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) will soon be rich. Jamal is a young orphan who lives in the slum area of Mumbai city. But mysteriously, this 18 year old can easily step into the final round of a quiz with prizes of 20 million Rupees.
One by one the questions asked by the host quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Jamal's Indian version was answered well. This sparked speculation that Jamal had been cheating and therefore the police come to hinder Jamal to be a winner.
Jamal then trying desperately to prove that he was never to cheat in this quiz. So start Jamal told his daily life and what they experienced during their stay in the slum area of Mumbai city, including her love Latika (Freida Pinto).
