At first, Darren Shan (Chris Massoglia) was just an ordinary young man with a high curiosity. Once when Darren and Steve Leonard (Josh Hutcherson), his friend, heard that a circus would come to their city. Beyond the knowledge of Darren and Steve, this circus will be a new beginning for both of their lives.
In this circus Darren and Steve saw many strange creatures that originally they thought was a hoax. Everything went normally until the two met Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) is mysterious. Steve Larten suspect is a vampire and trying to meet Larten without the knowledge of Darren. Steve wanted to become a vampire like Larten. Unfortunately Larten say that Steve's blood did not match and can not be changed into immortal beings like himself.
Beyond the knowledge Steve, it turns out to be his assistant Darren Larten want meaning Darren will be a vampire as well as himself. While knowing this, Steve was angry and thought that all that has been set from the beginning and vowed to kill Darren and Larten. On the other hand there were other beings who also desire the death of the vampire with their own reasons.
